This is a cool little spot. I loved the patio atmosphere. The service was great. I went out of my comfort zone and tried the daily special and it wasn't bad. I don't have to try cheeseburger pizza anymore, but it wasn't bad. I would definitely go back to try something that I normally would eat to give it a fair chance.

I came out to Joanie's for the first time after another place I was going to nearby was packed. A buddy and I weren't in the mood to wait so we thought we head over to Joanie's and try it out. We took advantage of the outdoor seating and ordered the "medium/normal" thick crust bacon and chicken pizza. Joanie's pizza is phenomenal and super reasonably priced. I understand all the hype now. It's amazing. The crust is thick, it's not too cheesy, the sauce is amazing, and the pizzas are loaded with high quality toppings. I'm not sure if they deliver, but I hope they do. I can't wait to come back here and with a bigger group. It has a really laid back neighborhood-bar vibe with a decent beer selection. I recommend checking Joanie's out if you're a fan of quality pizza.

Did the $7.75 lunch special with salad & toasted raviolis. Toasted raviolis seemed kinda burnt on the end & the vegetarian ones were flavorless - could have used more spinach & some salt. There is outside seating, a first level (bar) & a top story. Service was fast.

Let me start off by saying we are new to St. Louis. This was my first experience with the famous "Provel" cheese. It was amazing. Loved the fact that we could sit outside with our kids. My oldest ordered a cheese pizza and loved it. The little one ordered the spaghetti with a meatball and she declared it to be the best meatball she ever had!! Hubby and I split the Bruschetta appetizer, which was awesome. We then had a medium "Doug's South Side" pizza. We ate all of it, but were stuffed. The pizza was fantastic and I especially enjoyed the Provel. Our waiter was attentive and friendly and let us know that the pizza we ordered was the only one on the menu with the famous St. Louis style cheese. We will be back!!

This tiny whole in the wall place in Soulard has awesome pizza. Can't wait to go back.

Went to Joanies last nite with 15 folks. Service was excellent. Had their house salad with the house dressing(vinegarette) which was delicious. Also had BBQ thin crust pizza. Really tasty. Live entertainment downstairs while we were upstairs. First timer who will definitely go back.

Friendly service and great food! The salads are huge, the half is more than enough for one person. In fact, I split the meatball grinder and the Cesar salad with the hubs. The warm french bread sub roll was toasted to crispy-chewy perfection. The golf-ball sized meatballs, 4 to a sammich, were tender and full of seasoning. I think they are a mixture of italian sausage and ground beef. The salad was freshly torn romaine with the classic toppings of croutons and homemade dressing. Good stuff priced right.

Lunch with a coworker today. He had the pizza burger and I had a 9" margherita pizza. His pizza burger looked great - a big juicy patty layered with pepperoni and smothered in sauce and cheese. Like a pizza on a burger crust - Yum! My pizza was so crispy and delicious that I ate the entire thing! I am not a big eater, so the fact that I consumed a 9" pizza speaks volumes to the quality. The crust was crispy, the sauce tangy, the tomatoes and basil plentiful. Just the right amount of cheese to showcase the toppings. Service was great and the value was pretty good too. I will be back to try something else.

My favorite local pizza place here in STL (sorry IMO's). I always get a house deluxe and sub hamburger for sausage.

I met some co-workers here for a business lunch and discovered another great local place as a result! I opted for the pizza & salad lunch special. I was given the choice between thin and hand-tossed - being from Chicago I asked which was thicker. Hand tossed it was. Add some crumbled sausage with a beautiful flavor and slivered onions and it made a delicious lunch. The salad with a house Italian was pretty good as well. I spotted a calzone on my way out and will definitely order one of those next time around. This next comment may cause a riot in the STL pizza-loving community but I really like provel cheese much better on top of a salad than a pizza. Fortunately, that was what I received. Great service+competitive prices+good food = I'll be back...

It's okay. Nothing about the food is exactly authentic or signature. It's a good location and good prices, but it's not the place you go if you're craving great food.

I haven't had a chance to eat here yet, but I recently came out for some drinks with friends on a Thursday night. We had a great time! They have a plentiful selection of beer and a great atmosphere - the place is cozy and dimly, yet adequately lit. The bar tenders were welcoming and helpful. I also got to play an open mic here: the host, Wes was very cool and welcoming, and the crowd was receptive. I will definitely come back to play here and/or swing by for a drink.

I have been a big fan of Joanie's for over 5+ years, the pizza is great and the rest of the menu is just as good. However we all know the reason we come here, its for the pizza. I usually get the double crust pizza, which is a true pizza pie with a great tasting crust cooked on top of the toppings. It does not matter what toppings you get all of them are great, very high quality ingredients are used here. They also have excellent calzones too. One of my favorite pizza places in St.Louis.

A cute little tavern in Soulard. I came here this past weekend with some girls after we attempted McGurks and realized it wasn't quite our scene. I didn't try the pizza yet but OMG it smelled amazing. I really want to come back here for pizzaaa. Nom nom nom! We saw the live band, Acoustic Audio, and they were pretty good! Lots of classic rock and some oldies. The best kind of live music... and the drinks were pretty good for the price. I really want to come back for the pizza. The staff here is really nice too and I liked that it wasn't a freakin' mobscene. A bit of an older crowd, but again, that's what I liked about the place. They had an outdoor area too but it was a little too chilly to sit out there.... I will be back!

Awesome pizza, cheese garlic bread off the charts and unlimited ice tea in finally a glass more than 12 ounces! Highly recommend!

I get excited for Joanie's, the pizza is great. It only missed 5 stars because inside seating feels a little cramped, but outside the seating is nice. Sometimes they have outside seating in front making it dog friendly as well. They have open mic and bands, I even once did karaoke there, though I embarrassed myself it was fun. Make sure to check this place out.

I had received a gift card for here so we decided to try it. First of all, for call in-pick up orders, we discovered that there are two different locations, you don't get it at the main restaraunt, which we didn't know. I had the chef salad and it was alright, a little stingy on the salami but had a lot of turkey. And the lettuce was in huge hunks, it needed chopped a lot better. The calzone was also just okay. And we also had ordered a pizza which was very very good. So if you order here, stick with the pizza.

In college I would live off of pizza for months at a time. I would pay attention to pizza specials as closely as I would drink specials. As a sports fan I have consumed my fair share of pizza as well. I have ate pizza in three different countries and in a multitude of states. What I am getting at, is that I know my pie... Joanie's is the real deal. Smothered in toppings, zesty sauce, tangy melty cheese, perfectly balanced doughy/crispy crust. Of course being that Joanie's does things right, they cut the pie into the traditional St. Louis square slice (both thick and thin crust). Onto the toppings! Oh the toppings! There is no holding back on the toppings. As it should be, but it is commonly not, Joanie's piles them on! So much so, that you have to clean them off the pan with a fork when you are done. My favorite pie is the 'Grilled Chicken BLT' (thick) which is just simply perfect, especially after being handsomely precipitated with Parmesan and red pepper. Joanie's is a quality pizza place, in epic Soulard. In a market flooded with pizza topping skimpers, cardboard crusts, and just simply generic pies. Joanie's is a breath of fresh air... Until you eat so much you can't breathe any longer!

I recently endured my first Joanie's experience and have no beef whatsoever. Overall, it was a great dining experience. We went there in celebration of my niece's birthday - her pops happens to work there. Our server was super nice and friendly. I split one of the magnificent buffalo chicken pizzas....it was so tangy and made sweet, sweet love to my mouth. The bleu cheese combined with the buffalo sauce gave it an amazing bite. It was a difficult choice....which pizza to get being it was my first time, but I was more than satisfied with the pie of choice. I hope to get back very soon and sample more of their delicious pies and perhaps a calzone or two. Great place to dine in Soulard if you are looking for a solid pie, fantastic employees, and a great atmosphere.

Yep, sorry to say that I don't get it. It didn't start off great & we almost walked away due to the congestion at the entrance (thanks to an influx of broads in Mizzou colored tutus & a huge video game at the entrance). There ended up being ample seating inside, but you wouldn't have known given the backup at the front. The drinks were fine, though a tad weak. I did really like the friendly, fast service. The pizza, on the other hand, was not great at all. I had the 'thick' crust, which was sort of a thicker thin crust (ala Fortels), not the hand tossed, NY style that I was expecting. I got pepperoni, because that's the basic standard by which I judge all new pizza. The sauce was doled out a bit too liberally. It didn't taste very interesting when I was eating it the first time, and was only marginally better as leftovers later on. It reminded me a lot of the Chef Boyardee pizza mix that comes in the box at the grocery store. The ketchup was Red Gold (I'm partial to Heinz). The fries were flavorless & kinda thick (not true steak fries, but damn close). They were playing "I Get Knocked Down" by Chumbawamba, and I didn't especially care for that much at all. I like the idea of Joanie's. I just didn't much like it in reality. A bummer, really. Perhaps it was a bad night, or I was just too sober.

I have been eating at Joanie's on a regular basis, however this is my first time eating there as a Yelper and now I have not only an opportunity to simply review it, but to rave about it. I absolutely love Joanie's, I enjoy the food, the atmosphere, the clientele, the employees, all of work together in such a way that every time I leave there I leave full, happy and 110% satisfied. The only thing i have tried on the menu is the pizza, and I have had several different kinds there. If your a pizza lover, this is the place for you, they have regular pizzas and then there's their specialty pizzas to chose from. The menu also has burgers, sandwiches and salads as offerings which eventually I would like to try buy as of yet have to. their pizzas come in thin crust, thick crust and I always get the thin crust because that's my preference on pizza style... Do yourself a flavor and check out Joanie's when you can, if your like me or you like me, then trust me you won't be disappointed, I have yet to be.... now let me get back to eating...

Joanie's Pizzeria is one of my favorite pizzerias for many reasons. It could be because I have a family connection to Joannie. I've known her all her life. It could be because I know everyone that works there. But the main reason is the Johnnie's Meat Pie on thin crust. A meat lovers dream. Bacon , sausage, pepperoni and hamburger with lots of cheese too !

Visiting a place like Joanie's is an experience like no other! Upon entering you are blow away by the atmosphere. It reminds me of a real pizza joint! It smells phenomenal and I can just tell that the service is going o be excellent. What I love most are the people, especially the bartenders! There is nothing quite like chatting with a bartender. I feel like I always make new friends. Currently, Joanie's is preparing for Mardi Gras and I can tell the excitement is in the air! Beads are for sale and the Mardi Gras colors are everywhere! It's so festive. I am not a fan of real St. Louis Style pizza, but this pizza is actually really good. I currently have a crush on my own creation; cheese, pineapple, and mushroom! That's all I need and the kitchen does it right. If you are in the area and want some good food and awesome drinks you should visit Joanie's. I promise a good time. Oh, and I plan to meet Joanie one day so I can tell her how awesome I think she is.

I only go to Joanie's Pizzeria in Soulard for one reason . . . the patio. They are located at 2101 Menard Street in Soulard - at the corner of Menard and Russell Blvd. Great outdoor patio with tables, chairs, and umbrellas! The service is usually pretty good - never awful and never great, but usually good. Pizza always seems fresh with good ingredients and crust is always tasty. It is just not a five star establishment in my book. Do go to eat outside - the interior has not been updated since the very late 90s . . . can't even go inside anymore.

I first went here a couple of years ago after a long day celebrating St. Patrick. A bar for sure but with some excellent food. Go here when a game is on TV and you may not be able to think, depending on who your neighbors are. On my last visit they had a solo guitar guy and that was good enough to add to the evening. On this visit for lunch I shared a bacon and green pepper pizza which was excellent, a salad that was very good and some cheese garlic bread, very good also. Joanie's is closer to a 5 than a 4. Great food, excellent service and a pub type feel? Check them out.

Very good service. I actually like their whole menu. I often go there for many things other than the pizza. The staff is very courteous. One time my friends and I came in craving ice-cream. They didn't have it on the menu but they had ice-cream for a drink. They ended up creating an ice-cream brownie sundae for us and its been on the dessert menu ever since!

Joanie's goes down a few stars only for their hand-tossed crust. If we're talking about their thin crust pizza, they are definite 4-5 star pizza joint! Went there yesterday for lunch and felt like being adventurous, so I ordered a personal pizza with hand-tossed crust. It wasn't so great. Not bad, just didn't have any flavor and didn't really do anything for me. Our service was good, as always, and the house salad is still pretty tasty. I was just bummed that I took a risk and it didn't pay off. Oh well, I will still continue to eat Joanie's pizza. Now I know to stick to the St. Louis style instead :)

Great pizzas. I recommend the veggie pizza. The house salad is also very good. Easy order in to work downtown. Reasonably priced. Asiago chicken pizza is also very popular.

I visited Joannie's Pizza for lunch, what a mistake!!! The service was absolutely terrible. I have never heard a waitress have to tell so many people she was sorry it took her so long to take their order. There were only two people in our party and it took forever to get our food. We didn't order anything special, we actually ordered off their lunch menu. Of course, when the waitress brought out our food, it was wrong. I ordered a spinach/mushroom pizza, I got a mushroom pizza. They did give me a free pizza, the one I actually ordered to take home with me. This experience has turned me off of Joannie's and I do not recommend it for lunch!!!!!

Awesome thin crust and thick crust pizzas. The thin is lovely and crispy, the thick has good crisp to chew ratio. Both have a great sauce. I have had great italian sausage, veggies and yummy roasted garlic on them too. Joanie's is easily my fave pizza in St Lou. I prefer sitting upstairs where the ambiance is a little less smoky. Service is generally friendly if a bit slow. Dress is strictly casual. The only other things I have gotten in here is salads in the house vinaigrette and very tasty cheesy garlic bread. It is hard to resist the pizza. Try Joanie's, it's a gem.

Let me first state that I came to Joanie's after a long night of drinking in Soulard. I'm trying to write a fair review, but for the life of me I don't remember all the details. Here's what I do remember... I chose a hand tossed pizza with chicken, onions, & mushrooms. Well... I'm actually not sure if I choose it or if they just brought whatever they thought would sober me up. The pizza was simply awesome. The marinara sauce that came with the garlic cheese bread was memorable... even in my drunken stooper. I loved it so much that I must have bothered the waitress about it... my togo box has an extra side for crust dipping later. LOL... it looks like I remembered to take a Yelp pic before devouring. There are large chunks of the night that I don't remember... so the fact that I remebered the meal I ate at the end of the night speaks volumes. Service was very good. I'm sure I was a handful to deal with but the waitress was very friendly and attentive. Don't ask me her name... I don't have a clue.

I have so much to say about this gem right down in the middle of Soulard. I should first let you know that Joanie's is easily my favorite restaurant in the St. Louis area. While I do agree with most of the reviews saying that their pizza is awesome, I can't help but notice just how underrated their pasta is. HOLY CANNOLI I've never had better chicken alfredo ANYWHERE. The sauce is made from scratch and simply fantastic. The chicken margarita pasta comes in at a pretty close second place. Do yourself a favor and order the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. I've ordered quite a variety from the their menu and after 2+ years, have yet to be disappointed with anything. Now that I've gotten food out of the way, let me go ahead and move on to the service. Just as I had said about never being disappointed with anything I've ordered, the same can go for their service. The staff is friendly, very attentive(but too overboard), and as fast as could be expected. Joanie's is really the only establishment in the area that I would give a full 5 starts to, and they certainly deserve it in my book. I can't even count the number of people that I have taken there that now love it just as much as me.

  • Mindy P.

LOVED the ambiance. Totally just chill and whatever, maybe that's the vibe in Soulard in general. My boyfriend and I ordered a pizza to split and wings for an appetizer. I wasn't crazy about the wings or the pizza... We ordered a goofy one, in my defense we were both so starving we would have eaten anything. I don't remember the name, but the toppings were cut up meatballs and onions and green peppers. I don't usually like large onions or green peppers, so obviously something was wrong with me when I ordered! Another reviewer mentioned the sauce and that is why I will go back. The sauce on the pizza is what kept me eating my least favorite vegetables! Wow... such a great flavor! Can't wait to go back in the right frame of mind! :)

Great location and cool decor. Service was very slow on a slow Saturday afternoon. The meatball sandwich was, meh. It could use more sauce and meatballs seemed overcooked. It didn't taste like it was made from scratch. Not sure if I would come back, at least not without a groupon.

What can I say about Joanie's that hasn't already been said? Housed in a beautiful brick building in Soulard, Joanie's offers several styles of pizza and many other delicious favorites. What's not to love? I came here on a Saturday afternoon with two former, pizza-loving colleagues. We tried an order of spinach-artichoke toasted ravioli mixed with an order of regular toasted ravioli for starters. Both were good, though not extraordinary (looked like they came from a local grocer). We also ordered a 14-inch double-crust pizza with sausage and pepperoni, which we were hoping would be enough. The pizza took a good while to come out, but not unreasonably long considering the style of pizza we ordered. Along with the t-ravs, it filled the three of us up sufficiently. The cheese was really thick/stringy and the bread was chewy and delicious. Unfortunately this pie (really, it IS a pie) was mostly bread, but I gotta say that crust was really good. I still would've liked to taste more sauce and toppings, though. Would I return? Definitely. Our meal was a good value considering how well it filled us up and how great it tasted. I would definitely like to try a different style next time. Give 'em a shot; they're a St Louis favorite for a reason.

Went to Joanie's last night a had a great dining experience. Friendly helpful wait staff, nice atmosphere and tasty bloody marys. Had a large thick crust pizza, half Garlic Chicken and half Chicken BLT. Kinda neat that they can do that, the only caveat being both halves will have the same flavor of sauce, so our BLT half had alfredo. Very tasty and very filling. Will be back!

Just a quick update since my February review. Saturday night music has become a semi-regular affair and a great addition. The other night a 2-piece acoustic called "Zero Friction" delighted the crowd and is rumored to be reappearing in the fall. Otherwise, Steve Reeb, a Belleville-area troubador has been keeping customers entertained with classic rock, pop and Top 40 acoustic, usually every other weekend. Keep booking great music Joanie! Would still love to see free Wi-Fi for Joanie's customers, since cell phone signal strength is really bad inside the bar.

A few nights ago my husband, a good friend, and I set out to find a good pizza. After fining our first choice had a 45min wait we decided to try again. So we chose Joanie's. We were seated quickly and the staff was very very nice. The restaurant is very cozy! We got a 16in pizza, half cheese half Italian sausage. The food is FANTASTIC, I was genuinely surprised. The sauce is zesty and their thin crust is crisp and crunchy. If you are ever close give them a chance, best pizza in Soulard and my new favorite pizzeria.

Wanted late night (relatively...is there any really late night pizza???)....anyway this is a really nice little bar with friendly servers and crowd. Joanie is a treat and you always have to love a hostess that engages customers and obviously loves her business and her customers. Pizza at 1145 PM was good but still has me looking for the best thin in STL....at least the best thin that doesn't have that crappy provel cheese :) If I'm in Soulard will definitely give it another try.

Nice little tavern with a decent menu and very tasty pizza. We got the thin crust house special. the crust was done perfectly. The sauce was good, not outstanding, but all the ingredients were fresh nicely done. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The upstairs room was very loud, but we ate on the first floor and the noise level while loud was tolerable.

After hearing about how amazing Joanie's pizza is for years, I finally made it in to decide for myself. The pizza is definitely good, but not oh-my-gosh-you-have-to-try-this good. I was with a group so got to try the thin and thick crust. The "thick" crust is more like a double thin crust. I think they call it hand-tossed, but it's not really that either since there's no outer ring of crust to hold on to. Thin is definitely where it's at because the thicker crust was very plain. It didn't seem to have any seasoning or flavor whatsoever. In addition to normal toppings there's quite a variety of specialty pizzas. Including buffalo chicken and I'm all about buffalo anything, so that was a must get. 4 out of 6 people who tried it went on and on about how hot it was. I actually didn't really think that, but if you have a low tolerance for hot sauce be prepared. It was really good, though. They use a combination of mozzarella and blue cheese crumbles on top, plus extra blue cheese for dipping if you want. The thin crust pepperoni was also good. But thin crust pizza has to have something amazingly different about it to wow me. Otherwise they pretty much all taste the same. And Joanie's was nothing special. In addition to pizzas there was a lot of sandwiches, pastas, and appetizers that looked really good. They have a pretty extensive menu so I'll definitely be back to try out some of the other choices.

We went to Joanie's last night for a light meal and wine. Joanie seated us and chatted for a bit, which was nice because we've never met the owner of our favorite pizza place! Patti and the Hit Men were performing (Patti and band member Mike are actually Joanie's siblings)- they sounded great and brought a fun crowd. Patti walked through the crowd making sure everyone was taken care of. Service was excellent as always! We had the meatballs and a broccoli & sausage calzone, which were both so delicious! Of course we saved room for our favorite cake from Golden Boys... it was hard to choose between the raspberry torte cake and chocolate cake. We went with the chocolate :)

I've been to Joanie's a few times and have not been disappointed. However, be warned that I'm a St. Louis Provel hater! I'd rather have traditional mozzerella. I'm also a sucker for BBQ chicken pizza and theirs is awesome. I always get the thin crust. They add black beans and cilantro for a little extra something that other joints don't offer. Last time we were there on a Monday which boasts 4pm - 10pm happy hour. Great drink specials, room at the bar, and your chance to spin the pie wheel. The wheel (see photo) has different prizes for either the whole bar or just the spinner. They range from free dessert and pizza, to $2 u call it shots and $1 long necks. My spin landed on $2 u call it cocktails, so the bar was happy. We had a fun time talking to the regulars and enjoying a mellow Monday night at Joanie's

Joanie's is one of the first places I "found" via Yelp. My roommate and I wanted food, he's extremely picky about where and what he eats. I, by contrast, wanted to try something new. He was so pleased with the service and food at Joanie's that he thereafter granted me much greater authority to choose our joint-dining venues. We went back a few more times, we were never disappointed, and you won't be either.

We go to Joanies before every Blues and Cardinals game. They sort of team-up with Johnnys across the street and shuttle people back and forth to the games. Howard drives the Joanies shuttle and he is the man. As far as the food goes...its all pretty good. There is nothing on the menu that I ever think to myself "man, I need to go to Joanies and get some ________." Overall its a cool little hang out with a nice patio and fun atmosphere. Best to go about an hour before Blues/Cardinals game, get a beer and some pizza, then take the free shuttle.

Great service. Relaxed atmosphere. Pizza was thin but overly crisp. And didn't have the dripping grease found on lots of thin crust pizzas. They even offered me a "to go" drink. Awesome!

LOVES me some Joanies! Joanie herself is a wonderful woman. She's as supportive as she can be with her time and money in the City, especially in the Soulard Neighborhood. Any pizza there is delicious, as are the calzones. I also enjoy the chicken breast sandwich. The soup on Wednesday is a chicken tortilla (Mexican soup? I know, right?) which is delicious. The staff is always great as well. If you're looking for a place to hit before a game, this is a great choice. I believe they offer shuttles to all Cards and Blues home games.

Joanie's is a casual Italian eatery, bar, beer garden, and institution in Soulard. Without Joanie's, McGurk's, Hammerstone's and a few others; Soulard wouldn't be Soulard. Joanie's is a gathering place for tourists and neighborhood residents. They have decent pizza (thick and thin) and are best known for their Margherita pizza. They carry all of the casual St. Louis Italian standards like toasted ravs (not my thing, but hey), a variety of salads, appetizers, sandwiches, etc. You can eat comfortably upstairs or watch a game at the small bar downstairs. Alana, the bartender will belt out a few well sung, husky rock ballads on Thursday scaraoke night . You can gather with her and a few fun locals for fun and hearty drinks at this casual, comfortable, low-key corner pub.

So it's a Saturday in Soulard. We had just taken in our customary sensory overload at The Market and we were ready for a cold drink and a tasty snack. I had a Groupon for Yemanja Brazil, but they weren't open for lunch. Next, Blues City Deli. Also...not open. (WTF Soulard?!) So, we continue to drive aimlessly around until I think - Hey, Joanies is in Soulard. A pizza snack appealed to us both. I was happy to see few people and lots of elbow room, so throw on another half star for that. With so few patrons in the place, one would think that extra attention would be given to one's order. NOT. Our pizza came out with all of the toppings huddled in the center of the pie. It made for a cheesy, gooping mess that really pissed me off. I think *someone* was pissed about having to work on Saturday because the lack of care put into our pizza was certainly obvious. On top of that, the ingredients lacked quality. The chicken was dry. The Alfredo sauce wasn't flavorful. Just a big ol' pile of 'meh'. I live way out in the county and I wouldn't dream of making the drive just for Joanies. Sorry, guys.

I've only ordered carry out from here but I've never really been that impressed. The food isn't bad, but at the same time it's not that great. The pizza is ok, and they have a decent muffaletta but it's not worth the price you pay for.

This is a great restaurant all around. It is good for lunch, dinner, or late night dining & is a must-try if you are in the Soulard area. The food is quality & tasty. The atmosphere is inviting & most of the service staff have worked there for years so if you go on a regular basis, you start recognizing familiar faces, including Joanie herself. Some of my favorites from the menu are: the house salad, spinach & artichoke ravioli, double crust pizza, & the calzone. I also like that they consistently offer specials - you can count on your favorites being there but you can also try something different if you are feeling adventurous.

The upstairs dining area was a good alternative location for a book club gathering, not too loud or crowded. For about $25 we split a family dinner with leftovers to spare: house salad, garlic cheese bread, toasted ravioli, and a large pizza with 2 toppings. Pretty good thin crust pizza, nothing that I'll be dreaming about but decent. Everything was just A-Okay. I was just happy they had Blue Moon, one of the few beers I thoroughly enjoy.

Joanie's may be a family establishment, but when my best friend decided this is where she wanted to start her bachelorette party, we decided we needed to find out their policy on erotic cakes. They were more than happy to not only let us bring in our 1.5 foot tall penis cake (made by yours truly from scratch...no pan needed might I add), but they gave us desert plates and a knife to cut it. Now that's service! The thin crust pizza is still tops by the way. No better bacon cheeseburger in the city. If only they sold it on the streets during Mardi Gras along with their peperoni.

Joanies's Pizza is great place if you are looking to find some pizza while down in Soulard. To describe Joanie's in one word would be quite difficult. You could use words like tasty, yummy, awesome, filling, and even perhaps inspiring. You can either order to go or eat in. Since I don't live in Soulard, I tend to actually eat there, which I prefer to do. Their pizza is wonderful. Cooked fresh and with generous amounts of toppings, the pizza is always steaming while it is brought out, served fresh. Of course, before the pizza there is always the appetizing appetizer. I always like to eat their cheese garlic bread or their toasted spinach artichoke ravioli. Joanies is a great place for pizza and a wonderful place to eat with family and friends. I highly recommend the place.

We had a good time on the patio here at Joanie's. The inside looked less inviting but we only had to go in there to use the restroom. We had the pesto chicken margherita pizza on the thick crust. The crust was nice even though I would call it more of a regular or hand tossed crust than a thick. The toppings where nice and fresh with good distribution for the style of pizza. I have also had the double crust double bacon hamburger which is an awesome guilty pleasure.

The thin crust is top notch!! Plus they offer a ton of different toppings an a nice selection of beer. Good TVs for sports. Main level is smoking and upstairs is non-smoking. Also, they have a great patio out back. Good location Great atmosphere Great service Low cost

Someone in the back *cares* about their sauce, and that is worth a lot. The thin crust pizza is exceptionally good, even though I'm not generally a fan of thin crust pizzas in general. It is funky, it is fun, it smells like an Italian restaurant should, and that is good enough for me.

Best. Calzone. Ever. This place has the atmosphere of the french quarter style courtyard and pub inside. It's a true Soulard staple. I live many miles from this place, and for a good calzone, I will drive there..I have been going here for nearly 10 years. It only takes one time and you will become a regular. They have great, not burnt or crunchy, toasted ravioli's, and the service is fast. You can count on Joanie's for great food, great atmosphere and great service!

Had a mixed experience here, but they did have pretty good pizza. The Spinach and Artichoke Toasted Ravioli was excellent and the house salad tasted pretty good too. The pizza itself was good but not amazing, we got thin-crust with some vegetable toppings. The cheese was solid (and not provel) and the toppings were tasty. The thin-crust pizza was a bit too crunchy for my taste, and didn't have any shape, which also disappointed me. I guess that's how St. Louis-style thin-crust is, but I didn't think it was all that good. I would be interested in trying the hand-tossed crust to see if its any better. We sat outside on the patio, which was nice, and the service for the most part was very good. My biggest problem with Joanie's was the bill. We ordered a make-your-own pizza, and were charged $1.25 for each topping (including tomatoes, mushrooms, onions), and $1.50 for the specialty toppings (in our case, garlic). This was absolutely ridiculous for a medium pizza, and more than stated on the menu. I do think I would come back to try a specialty pizza, and make sure this time that I order off the menu.

Went to Joanie's last night; I hadn't been there in years but nothing seems to have changed. We sat downstairs (I was with a smoker friend) and it was definitely smoky and kind of loud with the obvious regulars at the bar. I was hating the '80s music overhead, but I know that's being picky. It's really unfortunate that the non-smoking section is upstairs. We witnessed someone with a walking disability having to be helped slowly down the stairs by two friends, which seemed ridiculous. On to the pie. We opted for the double crust, for a change of pace. It did come out looking like a big pie with the crust on top. The Joanie's veggie was literally crammed with fresh vegs (bonus ponts for summer squash and spinach) which spilled out when you took a slice, and not overloaded with cheese, so it was manageable without being messy. The bottom crust also held up without getting soggy. A great pie, to be sure! They also have a limited but decent beer selection, not relying on just A-B products.

Joanie's is a good spot in Soulard, the drinks are strong and the food is good. The pizza is pretty good, I really liked the just plain old pepperoni. It's my favorite thin crust pizza so far in St. Louis... I definitely liked it way more than Imo's. The beer menu is a little weak, but not a big deal. The pours are generous from the bartenders, so the drinks are strong, just like I like them. Prices are pretty good as well. This is a very local neighborhood place though so don't be surprised if you see the same characters time after time. I like this about Joanie's, I trust a place the locals love. The downstairs bar can be pretty smoky, but that's about my only complaint. I almost forgot to mention, when they have the cream of mushroom soup, ORDER IT!! It's the most amazing soup I have ever had. It's homemade and so so tasty.

Never think twice about this place. I've eaten here several times before. They've changed their recipes around; added new ingredients, new combinations, and yet, it just keeps me savoring for more. We ordered one with lots of anchovies and mushrooms and another with lots of olives, green peppers, mushrooms and Italian sausages. Root beer seemed to be a perfect match. Add good friends. 4 Stars.

I really wanted to like Joanie's, because I like to avoid the national chain pizza places. So after the first 3 times I ordered delivery I kept telling myself I just wasn't ordering the right thing on the menu...eventually I'd stumble on the stuff they do really well......I never found anything that was that good, and have given up. The sauce is quite bland, the garlic bread with cheese also needs some flavor, and the price is pretty rough considering the low quality product (in my opinion). I tried all the crusts and several toppings combinations. Ferraro's pizza tastes better, though it's even more expensive. I only went into the restaurant once. All other times I ordered delivery or carry-out. The restaurant experience was nice enough, other than the pizza not being that great.

Joanie's Pizzeria has a good pie in a great neighborhood. We went on a cold, rainy day so we were unable to sit outside, but the atmosphere was befitting nonetheless. At Joanie's you have your choice between thin or thick pizza. But the thick is really just hand-tossed - I made sure to ask. I had their "thick" because I have really been craving hand-tossed pies lately. It was good. The sauce was sweet, the dough was tasty and the cheese was plentiful. My biggest complaint is that I ordered a 12-inch and received a 9-inch. But I was too hungry to send it back and decided to dig in. It is cut in squares like a traditional St. Louis-style pizza, but it unique in its own right. While Joanie's does not have the best pizza in St. Louis, it is definitely worth trying. The price is reasonable, they have Schlafley, and it's always nice to visit Soulard. If you haven't been, I suggest you stop by, have a beer and a few slices, and just enjoy some good company.

This ended up being one of my favorite meals while I was in town. I had a big satisfying Greek salad and a basket of vegetarian spinach & artichoke toasted ravioli! Be still, my beating heart! Seriously though, if you're a vegetarian (or anyone, for that matter) stop in and get some delicious t-ravs!

Good thin crust pizza; although it was tad chewy for my taste (especially for thin crust). Sauce was a bit sweet vs spicy. Toppings were excellent! Service was a bit spotty. But when it was good it was good . Stuffed mushrooms were bland and not worth getting. Motzerella sticks and Cesar salad were good. Drinks were huge (tea and water ), and beers were good and cold! Giant pizza plus apps was enough for 6. Sports bar kind of feel; good for kids and casual.

If the Imo family had a daughter who made pizza better it would be Joanie. A very unassuming place that the lower lever definitely has a sketch level to it. Pizza and calzone were great. I Wanted to try both and a personal pizza and calzone were just enough for two. $2 PBRs on top of it, Joanie has taken my heart.

I have had pizza here 3 times since I moved to the Soulard area. Its just not very tasty. It needs spices or at least some provel cheese. For a restaurant specializing in pizza, I'd think it should be a lot better. I could make better (and cheaper) pizza at home. They do have good service and good drinks (the Soulard Slammer is pretty good). I would go back on a Trivia Tuesday because its fun, but I would definately skip the pizza!

This is one of our favorite neighborhood bars in Soulard. The staff is always great and Howard is the man to get you to the game. We love the pizza, the thin crust is awesome and the wife and I love the buffalo chicken pizza. The meatballs are great and a must get whenever you go. Now that we live in the neighborhood Joanie's to go is awesome, we get our favorite pies and wings and we don't even have to leave the house.

Just had my second experience dining at Joanie's on Saturday night. The first time was during the summer, on a Friday night, outside, before a Card's game, with a Groupon. We ordered a pitcher of Blue Moon, a thin crust with bacon and some veggie, and bruschetta. I may have given it 5 stars after that visit. It was awesome sitting out on the street and the bacon was amazing. This time we get there about 10 PM and had the entire upstairs to ourselves. The bus girl took our drink order and got it wrong. I wanted my IPA and Suzie brought me a Blue Moon. She kindly brought me my IPA and I shared the "on the house" BM with Jacki. We ordered the stuffed mushroom caps which had spinach and cheese inside. Tasty. I had the double crust buffalo chicken pizza. I would have liked for it to be a little cheesier, but the chicken and buffalo sauce tasted good. The extra crust is good and makes it more filling than Jacki's St. Louis style thin crust pepperoni is, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. Jacki enjoyed her pizza as did Matt and Chris with their double crust deluxe sub olives add bacon. Not going to lie, a little bit of order envy there, but they let me have a piece...or two. Brad had a muffaletta which he enjoyed. I don't believe theres is like they traditionally are, but I guess it is their version. Lauren had a turkey sandwich which they forgot to leave off the pepporcinis. It came with chips and she asked to sub a salad and ended up getting both. The mixed drinks that Matt and Chris were ordering looked small, but if Chris' actions at the end of the night are any indication... Lauren was a little upset that she took forever to bring her water and Suzie was a little rude in checking ID, but my goal is to be carded until I'm 50, so its not that I mind getting it out. She made up points in asking if we wanted the check split. An enjoyable time and place to kick off "End of Daylight Savings 2010."

I have been going to Joanies regularly for about 5 years now... They have pretty good pizza, decent calzones, and really good salads. I would give them a higher rating but I just do not feel they have ever wowed me... The food is good, but for what you pay, i'd consider other places first. They really are not even in my top five pizzas in St. Louis.... I have always had good to decent service. The Patio is actually really nice, although I think it would be even better if it had direct access to the restuarant... But all in all I think it is good, better than average, but not great.

I came here towards the end of their kitchen service and was happily surprised at my Italian meatball pizza. Meatballs and veggies were fresh and delicious; the sauce was a little tart, but it worked with the rest of the pizza. It served on a thin St. Louis-style crust but it was better than other STL-style pizza; especially the chain stores. We sat in the outdoor patio and enjoyed a beautiful evening. The patio was pretty cozy and offered a great place for large groups to enjoy pizza and get a decent drink. Our server was fantastic, and was spot-on with drink refills. She was courteous and never pushy, except when we were asked to move into the bar area, since it was late and they were closing their patio.

If you work in Soulard, you no doubt frequent Joanie's at least once a week. And if you're not visiting this place and you like pizza (who doesn't?), you must come to Joanie's Pizzeria immediately. I don't work in Soulard, so the first time I visited Joanie's was at the Taste of Soulard event this spring, where I tried their Blackened Chicken Creole Pizza. I've been back to this place several times since then and am so glad I found it. For reasonably priced unusual pizza in St. Louis, you can't do better than Joanie's.

I have going to Joanie's since 2000. That is how long I have been eating at this pizzeria. The thin crust pizza is oh so delicious, plus you have several options for toppings. If you are not a thin crust fan, no worries thick crust is also available. The service is always consistent, never had a bad time. If you are going here for lunch give yourself a little longer then an hour. The place gets packed. If you are in a hurry, joanie's has a take out service as well , which is open late.

Yum! I had the pizza last night, eggplant and mushroom. Was kind of scared to try eggplant pizza but that's what my mother wanted. It was very good! Service is great there. I usually go in with a group and they alway accomodate us. prices are decent, you don't have to break the bank to go there. Water glass is about 32 oz, so no need to wait for a refill. I've had their calzones before and they are also good!

I really do not get all of the glowing reviews about this place, I think Joanie herself might have multiple yelp accounts. The pizza is so bland- like Barry Manilow bland. The crust is good, but any pizza place can stumble upon decent crust. I have never understood the draw of this place, OTHER than the location. It does have a great patio. The pizza is so run of the mill, you can pick up a similar pie in your freezer section.

This is such a fun place to eat! I love the patio. It definitely has that French Quarter feel, which is why I love hanging out in Soulard. It has a local, family-owned vibe and a great laid-back atmosphere. I've been here for lunch a bunch of times, and nothing beats their BBQ chicken pizza or veggie pizza. The personal pan size is perfect. They also have good, fresh salad. I would suggest coming here at an early or later time at lunch, because it gets really busy and there is often a wait. But it's well worth it. I've just always wished I could have come here when I'm not rushed on a work lunch break, because the patio would be the perfect place to spend a beautiful afternoon with a couple of glasses of wine or beer.

This is the worst pizza I have had in St. Louis to date and that includes national chains. It was pretty clear that the dough is frozen, and not fresh. The sauce had zero taste. The cheese was ok and there was just the right amount. The standards for pizza in this town are pretty low, so I don't expect much when I try something new, but this came recommended and was dissapointing.

I have been to Joanie's more times than i can count on both hands. Hell, I even have some in my refrigerator right now! Me and my best friend go about once a week and start off with their house salad. It is mixed greens with onions and cheese (provel?)... much better than most places who just serve iceburg lettuce. We each order pizzas after that, which is always superb. I enjoy their thick crust (I have yet to try the double) with cheese and pepperoni while my friend always orders the thin crust with sausage, onions, cheese, and mushrooms. The sauce is a bit sweet on the pizza, but still good none the less. They have an outside patio, a downstairs smoking section and bar, and an upstairs non-smoking area. I've sat in all and service seems to be the best downstairs. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys delicious pizza!! I have yet to be disappointed by Joanie's! And for those who can't dine in, up the street is a convenient take-out site.

We went to Joanie's after reading many reviews on this website. We did a daytrip from Kansas City and were starving after seeing the Gateway Arch. It was a very odd location for a pizzeria. The area looked like Queens or Brooklyn side streets. The door was beaten up and looked like it had tried to be jacked open. The whiff of cigarette smoke was quite prominent. Other than that, it was great! Ordered toasted ravioli and st. louis-style thin crust pizza. It was really good. I'm from NYC and thought that St louis-style was similar, but it's really good (and different...in a good way!) If you can get over the ambiance, Joanie's is a good place to eat.

This casual pizzeria in the middle of the walkable Soulard neighborhood has a menu full of pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches. Traditional and specialty fare alike will keep me coming back until I can sample all their options, and they also have plenty to serve your picky vegetarian friends, so everyone wins! Also, Joanie's To-Go is another location down the street if you're looking for carryout or delivered catering.

  • Reed R.

I work near Joanie's and have been there countless times. This is the best St. Louis thin crust pizza I have had. They have good lunch specials and I have never been disappointed with the food. The only negative is that the service can be slow during peak times. For example, don't expect to have lunch in under an hour on a Friday. This fact means I generally try to go on weekdays that are typically less busy.

We dined at Joanie's while visiting STL from KC. The bellman at the Hyatt suggested this place and after reading the reviews on Yelp we thought we would give it a try. It was great pizza with plenty of toppings. It is the kind of pizza that even though you are full you will have one more slice. The toasted ravioli was outstanding. My 7 yr old ordered the kids spaghetti and it was a little on the spicy side - I thought it was tasty. If in the area check out Joanie's you'll like it!!

I haven't tried the pizza at Joanie's yet, but I have heard the most amazingly bad (and entertaining) karaoke here. It's a good place to get some really cheap draft beer. I'm not really a fan of Budweiser, but it does seem pretty good and really cold here, so why not? It's a friendly place to go have beers and, as I've heard, some pizza.

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
